Relationship: The Essence of it all! (Part 1)
Horses are so much bigger and more powerful than us. In addition to that, they are prey animals while we are, by nature, predators, the hunters. Horses and people are NOT natural friends. Yet we can have a safe, loving, trustworthy and respectful relationship with them.
God is even bigger and more powerful than a horse. In addition to that, He is holy and perfect, while we, by nature, are sinful, selfish and imperfect. We are NOT natural friends with God. Yet we can have a safe, loving, trustworthy and respectful relationship with Him too!
How is this possible?
Horses, left to themselves, would never pursue or initiate a connection with a human being. It is us who first desire that connection and relationship, not the horse. It’s up to us to pursue and initiate connection and relationship with them. It’s up to us to show them how much more their lives can be, reaching greater potential and purpose, being safe and protected and cared for. Horses will never learn our language; it’s up to us to learn and understand their language and then communicate and approach them accordingly.
Likewise, humans, left to ourselves, would never pursue or initiate connection or relationship with God (Romans 3:11). It is God Who first loves us (1 John 4:19) and desires connection and relationship with us. And it’s in the context of that relationship that we realize how much more our lives can be, reaching greater potential and purpose, being safe and protected and cared for! It is God who pursues and initiates connection and relationship with us. And He left us His Word in our own language so we could learn and understand.
We can have a relationship with a massive animal by understanding their language, being consistent and fair, and spending time with them. The same is true with us and God. God is always consistent: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is always fair, He doesn’t change the rules, and He has given us His Word in our language so we can understand, and He invites us to spend time with Him.
There’s no greater honor or privilege!
